In September, another interesting event is commemorated
by Madhu Purnima. There were quarrelsome monks who had not attained Arhatship
among the blessed ones disciples and to teach them a lesson. He went away alone
in to the jungle. There he literally lived with animals. The wild animals of
the forest brought him food and he lived in the forest for many weeks. The monks
were still quarreling and the laymen, seeing their bad behavior ceased to support
them. The monks realized their bad conduct and sent a deputation to the Buddha
imploring them to return. When he took leave of his animal friends, some of
them died brokenhearted and because of their good Karma they were reborn in
the Deva realms. Indian Buddhists specially in Chittagong region, this day offer
honey to the Buddhists monks which in memory of this event.
KATHINA
