Nainital

General Information
Nainital is commonly known as the "Lake City", as it is located around the 'Nayana Tal'. The city is a beautiful mixture of all the colors of nature. This mesmerizing example can be seen in the first look of the city itself. On one hand, the city surrounds the lake, whereas on the other hand it is surrounded by seven hills known as "Sapta-Shring", which consist of the following hills- Ayarpata, Deopata, Handi-Bandi, Naina, Alma, Lariya-Kanta and Sher-Ka-Danda. Nainital used to be the summer capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh during the British regime and remained so for many years even after Independence. As per the legend, when Lord Shiva was carrying the body of his consort Sati, who had jumped into the sacrificial fire-Havankund organized by her father Daksha Prajapati, her (Sati's) eyes dropped out at this place and thus it came to be known as "Nayana Tal" or Nainital.
